Vein Sclerotherapy

A minimally invasive treatment for spider veins and smaller varicose veins.

Overview

Vein Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat spider veins and smaller varicose veins by closing the affected veins from the inside.

Rather than surgically removing the vein, a specialized medication called a sclerosant is injected directly into the vein, causing its walls to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the treated vein is naturally absorbed by the body, and blood is redirected through healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy is one of the most commonly performed treatments for smaller symptomatic and cosmetic vein conditions and is often used in combination with vein ablation to achieve the best long-term results.

How Vein Sclerotherapy Works

Using careful visualization and, when appropriate, ultrasound guidance:

  1. The affected vein is identified and evaluated.
  2. A sclerosant solution or foam is injected directly into the vein through a very small needle.
  3. The medication causes the vein walls to collapse and seal closed.
  4. Over time, the body gradually absorbs the treated vein while blood is redirected through healthy veins.

The procedure requires no surgical incision and is typically completed in the office or outpatient setting.

Benefits of Vein Sclerotherapy

Compared with traditional surgical treatments, sclerotherapy may offer:

  • Minimally invasive treatment
  • No surgical incision
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Little or no downtime
  • Improvement in the appearance of spider and varicose veins
  • Relief of symptoms such as aching, burning, or discomfort associated with smaller veins
  • Can complement vein ablation for comprehensive vein treatment

For many patients, sclerotherapy improves both leg comfort and cosmetic appearance.

What to Expect

Before the Procedure:

  • Clinical evaluation
  • Physical examination
  • Ultrasound evaluation when appropriate
  • Review of medical history and prior vein treatments
  • Discussion of treatment goals and expectations

During the Procedure:

  • The affected veins are cleaned and prepared.
  • A very small needle is used to inject the sclerosant into the target veins.
  • Multiple veins may be treated during the same session.
  • Compression stockings may be applied following treatment.
  • The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

After the Procedure:

  • Walking is encouraged immediately after treatment.
  • Compression stockings may be recommended for several days.
  • Mild bruising, tenderness, or temporary discoloration may occur.
  • Additional treatment sessions may be recommended depending on the extent of vein disease.

Recovery Timeline:

  • Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
  • Walking is encouraged immediately following treatment.
  • Strenuous exercise may be limited briefly.
  • Cosmetic improvement develops gradually over several weeks.
  • Follow-up appointments help assess treatment results and determine whether additional sessions are appropriate.

Who is a Good Candidate

Vein sclerotherapy may be appropriate for patients who:

  • Have spider veins or smaller varicose veins
  • Experience aching, burning, or discomfort related to these veins
  • Want to improve the appearance of visible veins
  • Have residual veins following vein ablation
  • Have healthy circulation suitable for treatment

A consultation and, when appropriate, ultrasound evaluation are required to determine candidacy.

Clinical Considerations

Vein sclerotherapy is performed by physicians experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease.

Not all visible veins require treatment, and not all leg symptoms are caused by superficial veins. Larger veins with underlying venous reflux often require vein ablation before sclerotherapy can provide optimal long-term results. Treatment recommendations are based on symptoms, ultrasound findings, vein size, and overall vascular health.
