Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
A common condition. A growing quality-of-life issue. A better treatment path.
Overview
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or prostate enlargement, is a non-cancerous condition that becomes increasingly common with age and affects many men over time. As the prostate increases in size, it can compress the urethra and disrupt normal urinary function.
While common, BPH is often under-treated or managed conservatively for too long—despite meaningful impact on daily life, sleep, and long-term bladder health.
ELMNT IR offers minimally invasive, image-guided treatments that address the root cause of symptoms—without the risks and recovery associated with traditional surgery.
Symptoms of BPH
Symptoms typically develop gradually and may worsen over time:
- Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
- Difficulty starting urination
- Weak or interrupted urine stream
- Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
- Urgency or inability to delay urination
- Urinary retention in more advanced cases (Inability to urinate)
These symptoms can significantly affect sleep, productivity, and overall quality of life.
When to Seek Treatment
Many patients delay treatment, assuming symptoms are a normal part of aging. However, untreated BPH can lead to:
- Bladder damage
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Kidney complications in severe cases
If symptoms are persistent or worsening, evaluation is recommended.
How BPH is Diagnosed
Diagnosis typically involves:
- Clinical history and symptom assessment
- Physical exam (including prostate evaluation)
- Urine and blood testing (including PSA when appropriate)
- Imaging or ultrasoundÂ
ELMNT IR works closely with referring physicians to ensure patients receive appropriate evaluation and are guided to the most effective treatment pathway.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on symptom severity, prostate size, and patient preference. Options may include:
- Medication to relax or shrink the prostate
- Surgical procedures such as TURP
- Minimally invasive treatments, including embolization
A Minimally Invasive Option
For many patients, Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE) offers an effective alternative to surgery.
PAE reduces blood flow to the prostate, causing it to shrink over time—relieving pressure on the urethra and improving urinary function.
Key advantages:
- No surgical incision
- No urinary catheter
- Lower risk of sexual side effects
- Lower risk of bleeding complications
- Outpatient procedure
- Faster recovery

Who is a Candidate
You may be a candidate for minimally invasive treatment if:
- Medications are no longer effective
- You want to avoid surgery
- Symptoms are affecting your quality of life
A consultation and appropriate imaging review are required to determine the most appropriate treatment.
