Overview

A thyroid biopsy, also known as an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, is a minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate thyroid nodules and other abnormalities within the thyroid gland.

Who is a Good Candidate

• Have a thyroid nodule associated with symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or neck discomfort
• Have been referred by a primary care physician, endocrinologist, ENT specialist, or another healthcare provider for further evaluation

Most thyroid nodules are benign, but certain ultrasound characteristics, growth patterns, or patient risk factors may indicate the need for biopsy.

Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration has become the standard diagnostic approach because it provides highly accurate sampling while minimizing discomfort and avoiding surgery in most patients.

Occasionally, biopsy results are indeterminate or non-diagnostic. In these cases, repeat biopsy, additional molecular testing, continued imaging surveillance, or surgical consultation may be recommended based on the individual clinical situation.
